Not everyone is aware of the fact that geotechnical drilling professionals may be working in areas with a lot of water present. While groundwater may be quite common throughout much of the state of Florida, geotechnical drilling professionals can also find themselves working in large bodies of water inland, or off the coast in the open ocean.

When drilling professionals are working in the ocean off of the coast in Florida, they will most likely be drilling from barges, which professionals will often call it barge drilling. Del Rio residents may have seen one of these large barrages before, as they are vitally important when doing any sort of marine drilling.

Barges however are not always the same. In fact, many drilling companies will have many barges depending on the specific location and situations that professionals are working in. Today we will be going over some of the information about drilling professionals and the barges that they use on a regular basis.

How Big are the Barges That Are Used in Marine or Geotechnical Drilling?

Barges themselves can be made of almost any size. Smaller ones are used for more inland areas, while super large barges are used in transporting and shipping, but what about the ones used in barge drilling. Del Rio residents should know that a good geotechnical drilling company will use barges of all sizes depending on the drilling task or location.

For example, medium to larger sized barges may be used as a nice drilling rig when working off the coast at a good distance, but smaller ones may be used closer to land or up in a large river or estuary.

The barge sizes themselves may also be chosen by the size of the drill that a professional is using. It should come as a surprise to no one that larger drills are going to need larger barge rigs to hold them steady on the surface of a body of water.

Are Barges Used in Inland Drilling?

Badges are commonly seen out on the open ocean, but do drilling professionals use their barge drilling rigs when working in an inland body of water? While it can be possible that barges are used on an inland body of water during barge drilling, Del Rio residents should know that oftentimes other forms of watercraft are preferred.

Barges are big and bulky, so they can easily become hard to use in an inland body of water, especially when that body of water is full of vegetation and other items that would restrict movement.

For that reason, it is more common to use smaller boats to help with inland waterway drilling. For example, professionals may prefer to use an airboat in an area like an inland river than they would to use a barge to perform marine drilling.
