Terms & Definitions
Vibracore:
Is the state-of-the-art process of collecting a continuous soil sample in water-saturated sediments from wetlands, harbors, and lakes to the deep ocean. It allows for deep penetration in a single deployment and a high core recovery where other approaches such as rotary drilling, coring, or auguring prove either inappropriate or impractical. This is done by the energy (vibration) produced from the power head (vibrating mechanism), which rearranges the sediment particles, allowing gravity and the weight of the power head to push through the sediment. A core catcher is attached to the end of the sample barrel and holds the sediment inside the barrel when withdrawn from the sediments. A variety of vibracore units are available. Some are small, lightweight and portable, others are large heavy units that can only be deployed from large vessels. Vibracoring has become a tool of choice for retrieving cores in contaminated sediments and hazardous environments.
Equipment
Extensive equipment inventory includes the 77’ Offshore vessel “Thunderforce,” 34’ Inshore Vessel “Scully,” several shallow draft vessels, multiple vibracore machines, MCPT equipment, as well as a variety of soil sampling and rock coring equipment for water base drilling. For all project sizes, from small 3’ vibracores for your local marina or pond dredging project to large 20’ or 40’ vibracores for large offshore sand search, AVS has the equipment to handle the job.
